In 2003, more than 20 years after its humble beginning, interventional cardiology is a mature and major player in the management of complex cardiovascular problems. Its goals are to improve the symptoms, sustain the positive acute gains, and prolong life. The politically correct challenge is how to apply it at a universally affordable price to the American elderly patient population living on retirement benefits (without bankrupting Medicare) or to the financially struggling patients in developed ordeveloping countries
